Throughout March, The Roxy will be celebrating the work of The New Faces of Hollywood. These are the earliest films by some of the most ambitious and successful contemporary filmmakers, the work on which the directors of today's biggest blockbusters cut their teeth.
Before she became a household name and a candidate for Time's Person of the Year with the smash-hit Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins became a rising indie star with the gritty true crime drama Monster, the film Roger Ebert called one of the three best of the 2000s.
Shortly after moving to Florida, longtime prostitute Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron) meets young and reserved Selby Wall (Christina Ricci) and a romance blossoms. When a john (Lee Tergesen) attempts to brutalize Aileen, she kills him and resolves to give up prostitution. But supporting herself and her new girlfriend through legitimate means proves extremely difficult, and she soon falls back on old ways. More johns die, and Selby can't help but think her new friend is responsible. Charlize Theron won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Wuornos.
