Sharma provides an overview of the New York School of Painters and Poets as context for Philip Guston’s painting Cigar (1969). Sharma is a professor of English at the University of Montana, and founder of the conference Thinking Its Presence: Race, Creative Writing, Literary Studies and Art. She was recipient of a 2010 Howard Foundation Award. She is the author of the forthcoming Grief Sequence (Wave Books, 2019), and poetry collections Undergloom (2013); Infamous Landscapes (2007); The Opening Question (2004), winner of the 2004 Fence Modern Poets Prize; and Bliss to Fill (2000).
