Recreational Marijuana in Missoula: What visitors and residents should know
Visitors and Residents Over 21 Years Old Can:
- Purchase marijuana and marijuana products from licensed dispensaries. A valid form of identification is required for proof of age.
- Purchase up to 1 ounce of marijuana per transaction, or the THC equivalent in other forms: 800 milligrams of edibles or 8 grams of concentrate.
- Drive with marijuana in the vehicle, as long as it's stored in its original, unopened package and located outside of the car’s passenger area. (i.e. in the trunk, locked glove compartment or truck bed. Or, if the vehicle lacks a trunk, the package must be stored behind the last upright seat of the vehicle, or in a closed container in a space that passengers do not normally occupy)
- Consume marijuana in a private residence/property with the owner's permission.
Montana Residents can grow and possess two mature marijuana plants and two seedlings of their own, but are not permitted to grow plants in a publicly visible space.
Visitors and Residents Cannot:
- Purchase, distribute, manufacture or possess marijuana if they are under the age of 21.
- Purchase/possess more than 1 ounce of marijuana or the THC equivalent in other forms.
- Drive under the influence of marijuana, which could result in a DUI-D.
- Drive with marijuana stored unlawfully in their vehicle.
- Consume marijuana in outdoor or indoor public spaces.
- Consume marijuana in National Parks, as they are federal land.
- Cross state lines with marijuana in their possession, nor can they fly with marijuana (Idaho and Wyoming uphold strict laws criminalizing marijuana).
Good to Know:
- Bring cash. Nearly every dispensary requires cash transactions due to ongoing federal restrictions. (All recreational marijuana purchases are subject to a 20% sales tax. Missoula county has an additional local-option 3% tax)
- Possessing and consuming marijuana on Indian Reservations in Montana is complicated and depends on the enforcement of federal marijuana laws, as well as how each tribe approaches the question of marijuana legalization
- Speak with a "budtender" at your local dispensary to learn what products, dosages and strains are right for you. Customers can choose from a variety of cannabis options, including marijuana flower, tinctures, concentrates, vaporizing units, CBD salves and more. Ask questions to make safe, informed decisions about your recreational marijuana purchase.
