After breakfast, head to the Missoula Art Museum, a short and beautiful walk through downtown. This contemporary museum showcases local artists, as well as regional and national exhibits, offering the chance to immerse yourself in the art that is inspired by the natural beauty of the area. Spend the rest of the morning exploring the colorful shops in downtown Missoula and the Hip Strip area, including classic Missoula stops like Rockin' Rudy's and Shakespeare and Co. Bookstore. Wander through the heart of Missoula, where you’ll find charming historic buildings, quirky shops, and local boutiques. Missoula has a great antiquing scene, so if that is of interest we recommend checking out the Missoula Antique Mall a little ways out from downtown.
For lunch, check out one of the many options in downtown Missoula. You will be surprised at the culinary cuisines to chose from. Grab a burger at Wally & Bucks, enjoy authentic Mexican fare at The Camino, sample the delicious rotating seasonal menu at Top Hat Lounge, or enjoy a pint with your lunch at Tamarack Brewing Company. After lunch, take a short drive (or Uber) to the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area, just north of Missoula. The Rattlesnake Loop trail offers a moderate hike with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valley. If you prefer something shorter and easier, you could check out Greenough Park, which allows paved trails along the Rattlesnake Creek just outside of downtown Missoula. After your hike, head back to town and enjoy a leisurely walk along the Riverfront Trail or take in the great views of the river from Caras Park. Grab a warm coffee beverage at Black Coffee Roasters or Liquid Planet to end the afternoon.
Once you freshen up for the evening, treat yourself to dinner at Pangea, known for its elevated American-international fusion cuisine with wine, beer, and cocktail pairings. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll to Montgomery Distillery for a nightcap featuring spirits distilled in Missoula.
For your second day, start with a delicious breakfast at Market on Front. We recommend the breakfast burrito. Don't let the long line scare you off: they move through customers very efficiently and it is worth it! They offer a range of breakfast options from fresh pastries to gourmet breakfast bowls as well, and their coffee is fantastic, too. After breakfast, spend the morning learning about the history of Missoula at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula. Located on the westside of town, the museum features exhibits about the area's Native American history, early settlers, military presence, and the development of the region. The museum is located at Fort Missoula, a historic U.S. Army post, and the entire compound offers a historical feel in a beautiful setting. For lunch, we recommend checking out The Notorious P.I.G for delicious southern-style barbeque. They have delicious pulled pork or chicken sandwiches, a great variety of sides, and delicious desserts. There are two locations in town, one very near Fort Missoula and the other located downtown.
While you are on the western side of town, spend some time in the afternoon exploring some of the scenic natural areas in the area. Maclay Flats offers an easy and scenic loop, Blue Mountain's crisscrossing trail system offers many options for exploration, and Pattee Canyon In the afternoon, head up to Pattee Canyon, just outside Missoula, for a more serene outdoor experience. If there’s a light dusting of snow, the wintery landscape here can be stunning. Pattee Canyon offers a number of short, easy trails that wind through the pine forests. Even if there is a light dusting of snow on the ground, it is the perfect chance to relax and take in the scenic beauty of Montana. If you’re in the mood for some shopping, stop by Southgate Mall, where you’ll find a range of local boutiques and stores. If craft beer is your scene, Missoula is the spot for you. With over a dozen of breweries to choose from, all with their unique style and atmosphere, you have a lot of sampling to look forward to!
