During the summertime, the Route of the Hiawatha is an outdoor adventure park unlike anywhere else. This 15-mile rail-trail follows a former Milwaukee Railroad line, beginning in Montana and dropping hikers and bikers (and e-bikers) down into Idaho at the trail’s end. With 10 tunnels, seven trestles and 47 interpretive signs to learn about the route’s history along the way, this unique bike path offers unparalleled views of the western Rockies. You’ll start at the East Portal in Saltese, MT—the top of the route—and ride the route through to Pearson, ID. Plan for 2.5-3.5 hours of gentle downhill riding, and allow extra time for riding the shuttle back up the mountain. Need gear for your journey? No problem! Rentals are available at Lookout Pass Ski Area, just a short seven mile drive west of the trailhead. If you’re bringing along your equipment, remember to pack a headlamp — a mandatory accessory for the trip.
