Let's Take Care of This Place: Voluntourism in the Greater Missoula Area

There’s this place that is as open and free as the mountains and rivers surrounding townhere the mountains call, the wilderness beckons and the community encourages meaningful connections. In Missoula, that connection to the outdoors runs deep, and it doesn’t just stop at the popular trailheads and river put-ins around town.

Locals and visitors alike are finding that connection and sense of community through giving back to the places and spaces that brought them here in the first place through acts of service and volunteering. Summer is the perfect time to give back through protecting the landscapes and stories that make this region so unforgettable.

Summer 2026: Two Chances to Give Back Along Lolo Trail

This summer, locals and visitors alike are invited to experience the Northern Rockies in a more meaningful way. Travelers Rest State Park and the Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance have partnered with local outfitter, Lewis & Clark Trail Adventures, to offer opportunities to care for the landscapes along the Lewis and Clark and Nez Perce National Historic Trails, the route taken by Lewis and Clark on their journey west in 1805 as well as the route taken during the flight of the Nez Perce in 1877.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to repair signage and improve trail conditions, opening up access for visitors to enjoy this scenic and historic route for years to come. This immersive voluntourism experience combines meaningful trail work with rich interpretation, cultural engagement and backcountry exploration. Whether you join in June or July, each experience offers the same opportunity: to connect more deeply with this place while helping preserve it for those who follow.

In addition to assisting with trail improvements, participants will also experience guided hikes to historic campsites, interpretation from subject matter experts and evening campfire programs featuring Nez Perce tribal representatives, Lewis & Clark historians and U.S. Forest Service staff. The cost includes all meals and outfitter costs. For more information, including a packing list and all included items, visit Travelers Rest’s website.
