Milltown State Park

Where two rivers meet, adventure begins. Explore miles of trails that wind through restored floodplains, cottonwood groves, and dramatic cliffs. Once a Superfund cleanup site, Milltown State Park now tells a powerful story of restoration, as the newest state park in Montana, just 5 miles east of Missoula.

Travelers’ Rest State Park

Walk the only archaeologically confirmed Lewis and Clark campsite in the country. Follow interpretive trails, visit the museum, and connect with Salish history at this cultural crossroads. With Lolo Creek flowing through Travelers’ Rest and frequent bird sightings, it’s a peaceful, historic stop just 8 miles south of Missoula.

Council Grove State Park

Step into the beauty of this riverside forest, where the 1855 Hellgate Treaty was signed. Tall pines, cottonwoods, and rich bird habitat line the Clark Fork River, offering a serene setting for walking, fishing, or reflecting. Council Grove State Park is only 7 miles west of Missoula, it’s a quiet place with a deep past.

Frenchtown Pond State Park

This family favorite features a spring-fed pond perfect for swimming, fishing, paddling, and picnicking. With group shelters, playgrounds, a walking trail, and a veterans memorial, Frenchtown Pond State Park is a hub for outdoor fun and community events—just 15 miles west of Missoula near Frenchtown.

Fort Owen State Park

Explore the site of Montana’s first permanent settlement, built in 1850 within Salish homelands. Tour the adobe barracks, read about the area’s early Catholic mission, and imagine life along the frontier. Small in size but big in history, Fort Owen State Park sits just 25 miles south of Missoula near Stevensville.

Beavertail Hill State Park

Unplug and unwind along the Clark Fork River at this peaceful park with riverside camping, shaded nature trails, and even two rentable tipis. Great for fishing, floating, or a night under the stars, Beavertail Hill State Park offers both adventure and calm—located 26 miles east of Missoula.
