Why Missoula is One of the Best Running Towns in America

Running in Missoula is not just an activity–it is a way of life that is engrained into the vibrant culture of our town. The scenic mountains beckon active living, the farm-to-table movement prioritizes health and the supportive community encourages others to try new things and achieve their goals. Run Wild Missoula’s Executive Director, Trisha Dobeck, explains that “running in Missoula isn't just about logging miles; it's about being part of a community that celebrates movement, connection, and the outdoors.”

We have always known that Missoula is a haven for running culture, and others have noticed, too! Check out some of the recognition and accolades that have been awarded to Missoula and the Missoula Marathon over the years:

Popular Trails

According to Dobeck, “the passion for movement is reflected in our priority to have an incredible network of trails, riverside paths, open space, and mountain access that allows runners to train year-round while surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.” With hundreds of miles of trail in and around the city limits, the hardest part about finding a place to take a run in Missoula is picking where to go! Some popular spots include:

Rattlesnake National Recreation Area
Rattlesnake National Recreation Area has a number of options when it comes to running difficulty and length in a lovely wooded area.

Kim Williams Nature Trail
The Kim Williams Trail is great for all skill levels, offering nearly 10 miles of flat, heavily-trafficked trail meandering along the Clark Fork River.

Mount Sentinel Routes
In addition to being home to the famous “M Trail,” which consists of 643 vertical gain in .75 miles, the Mount Sentinel trail system has many options for out and back runs and loop trail options, with some connecting directly to town via the Kim Williams Trail system and the University of Montana.

Blue Mountain Recreation Area
Similar to the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area, Blue Mountain is chock full of criss-crossing trails, allowing runners to choose their own adventure.

Riverfront Trail System
The Riverfront Trail and Milwaukee Trails are interconnected trails systems that run through town, including the downtown areas, and consist of 7 miles of paved, maintained and lighted trail that sees moderate to heavy usage year-round.

Races to Plan A Visit Around

With such a strong culture around running, it is no surprise that Missoula is home to many races throughout the year ranging from fun runs to ultra marathons. Many visitors will plan their Missoula adventure around one of these world-class events, with the most popular event being the Missoula Marathon. Dobeck elaborates, stating  “People often come for the [marathon or half marathon], but they leave talking about the community. The course is beautiful, but it's the volunteers, spectators, downtown atmosphere, and the feeling of being welcomed into Missoula that keeps runners coming back year after year. Participants enjoy a fast, scenic course, breathtaking views, and an unforgettable finish in the heart of downtown Missoula. Beyond race day, visitors discover a vibrant community, locally owned shops and restaurants, endless outdoor recreation, arts and culture and the welcoming spirit that makes Missoula special. It's one of those rare events where the destination is every bit as memorable as the race itself."

Some popular events worth planning a visit around include:

Missoula Marathon: This annual, award-winning and nationally-recognized event takes place each summer. There is a race for every runner including a kid’s run, beer run, 5K, half marathon, and full marathon.

Mount Jumbo Elk Ramble: Each November, runners take on this challenging 15K trail run through the scenic Mount Jumbo trails, clocking some serious elevation and miles.

Snow Joke Half Marathon: Running is a four-season activity in Missoula and a little snow doesn’t slow us down! This half marathon takes place in the gorgeous Seeley Lake community in February as a celebration of all things winter-running.

River City Roots Run: The beloved River City Roots Festival is Missoula’s celebration of summer each August, and alongside great music and food, the festival features a 4-mile run through the heart of downtown Missoula.

The Pengelly Double Dip and Bob Hayes Single Dip: The Pengelly Double Dip Course is a tall half marathon+ with 3,400 ft of elevation gain; very challenging and always worth it! The Bob Hayes Single Dip Course is probably the toughest first mile of a 10K that you’ll ever do. After that, it ain’t so bad, and gives you the best views in town.

City To Sky Ultra Run: Missoula’s only ultra runs occur in October and offers two routes to choose between, the 50K and the 25K. These unique trail races finish in Missoula’s University District featuring less than 2 miles of pavement and some of the smoothest single track in Montana. Both races highlight the best of Missoula’s iconic open space, conservation lands and recreation areas.
