Peak to Paddle Missoula Outtertrails Northeast of Missoula

Head northeast into the Seeley-Swan Valley and the legendary Bob Marshall Wilderness, where rugged mountain landscapes, crystalclear alpine lakes and endless outdoor recreation await. This scenic region is known for its incredible hiking, backcountry camping, fishing and wildlife viewing, with hundreds of lakes tucked between the Swan and Mission mountain ranges. When winter arrives, the area transforms into a snow-covered playground with miles of snowmobile trails and other winter recreation opportunities. Peaceful lakeside hikes, remote wilderness backpacking trips and weekend camping getaways make this region home to some of Montana’s most iconic outdoor experiences.

MORRELL FALLS

Located about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Missoula, this 5.5-mile out-and-back trail is an easy adventure perfect for hikers of all skill levels. The wide, gentle path is also popular with horseback riders and mountain bikers, making it a great option for a relaxing day outdoors. Visit between May and October to enjoy the trail at its best, and if you’re looking for a quieter experience, head out early or later in the day. Dogs are welcome, with off-leash opportunities available in some areas.

HOLLAND LAKE FALLS

Located about 90 minutes north of Missoula, this popular hike in the Flathead National Forest leads to the beautiful Holland Falls and offers an excellent reward for a relatively short effort. The well- maintained trail follows the shoreline of Holland Lake, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains before climbing gently toward the waterfall. A short rocky section near the end adds a bit of challenge as you approach the impressive cascading falls. Because of its scenic beauty and accessibility, the trail can be busy on weekends, so an early start is recommended for a quieter experience.
